Description

Piperacillin and Tazobactam Injection is categorized under the ‘Antibiotics’ class of medications, mainly utilized for treating bacterial infections. It is effective in addressing various types of hospital-acquired pneumonia, ventilator-associated pneumonia, urinary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, skin and soft tissue infections (such as diabetic foot ulcers), and uterine infections. A bacterial infection arises when harmful bacteria proliferate within the body, leading to illness. These infections can affect any body part and multiply rapidly.

How Piperacillin and Tazobactam Injection Work?

Piperacillin and Tazobactam Injection consists of two components: Piperacillin (a penicillin antibiotic) and Tazobactam (a beta-lactamase inhibitor). Piperacillin falls under the category of ‘Penicillin antibiotics.’ It demonstrates bactericidal properties (the ability to eliminate bacteria) against both gram-positive and gram-negative aerobic (requiring oxygen for survival) and anaerobic (able to survive with little or no oxygen) bacteria. It functions by binding to the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) within the bacterial cell wall, inhibiting cell wall synthesis. Tazobactam acts as a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Beta-lactamases are enzymes produced by bacteria that confer multi-resistance to β-lactam antibiotics, which include penicillins and cephalosporins. In Piperacillin+tazobactam, Tazobactam stops bacteria from degrading Piperacillin.
